I believe this feature is popular across many social platforms - Follow. It means you get notified once the user you're following has new activity, post etc. I've seen some users here in Space SE (regardless of more or less rep) keep asking interesting questions and answering with quality answers.

Maybe there should have a feature similar as this; once the followed user has new activity, its followers would get notified. Perhaps through email, push the post they've interacted with (asked, answered or modified) or something else.

The "Active" tab is the one widely used I assume; in which the posts are sequenced by latest action carried out. Would a "follow" feature disrupts this and causes some questions to gain even less attention due to the preference settings?

$\begingroup$ While SE is and doesn't want to be a social media sites (i.e. focus on contents, not users), FWIW, each user has its own RSS feed at the bottom on the user's "Activity" tab (e.g. this is your user feed). $\endgroup$ – Andrew T. Dec 24 '18 at 13:18
  • $\begingroup$ I'm the sole down-voter by the way. For meta questions, down votes don't necessarily mean the question is bad, they are just a quick way to efficiently tally 'agree' and 'disagree' without everyone having to write a separate answer. Right now it's just +0/-1, so mostly it's the third category? (don't care) I certainly hope SE remains non-SM, where SM stands for social media but could easily mean the other thing (too much SM in SM). ;-) So following users seems just slightly creepy to me, but that's just me. $\endgroup$ – uhoh Dec 29 '18 at 4:06
